Where do you feel your intuition?
This was the prompt that began a lively Roundtable discussion with Aspiring members last week with our guest rockstar Leah Goldman, The Intuition Strategist. One member shared, “I feel it in my gut,” and saw lots of nodding heads. Another described, “My breathing gets short, and I can feel my heart pumping.” Nobody felt that our body cues about intuition were subtle, yet why are we often hesitant to trust these feelings when we feel them?
I will admit that I have felt self-conscious about heralding EQ as a leadership superpower, as some people (often men) dismiss those instincts as “soft skills.” However, the success of Excelle proves quite the opposite. When we create space for women to explore gut feelings, we learn that the success in leadership is more about discernment than governance. If a strong mind and body wants to stay in alignment, intense physiological cues could be an indicator of something out of alignment. Leah calls intuition: “the algorithm that your body has to make sense of the data it collects.” She notes that our bodies are constantly amassing invisible data, so when we have a strong instinct, we can be confident that it is a strategy with conviction, informed by the sum of interpersonal engagements we have been accumulating over time. Although the personnel decision that I made last week felt uncomfortable on many levels (loss of sleep, trouble focusing, less patience), creating space to interpret my instincts was the only path to relief. I spent intentional time collecting “data” and checking in with my reactions, and it became obvious that the pattern of doubts grew too large to ignore. Indeed, the surge of energy and positivity that I experienced (post decision) gave me all the affirmation I needed. I believe in kismet. Thank you, Leah, for giving me the nudge to trust myself.
