Hello Ladies-

Returning from spring break is always hard, but this Monday I was dragging in a way that felt new and unfamiliar. I sensed a weight in my chest, and my body was sluggish all over.  As someone who was fortunate to discover the benefits of therapy early in life, I rolled through my typical rolodex of worries, but nothing seemed to resonate with the sensations I felt. Finally, I arrived at the painful truth that has been emerging slowly for months.

I am lonely. 

But how?  I have a business that challenges and inspires me daily, working with women who represent the best versions of how humans should move through the world, both shiny and vulnerable at the same moment. I have a family who is healthy and loves each other unconditionally, and friends who are responsive and caring.  What is wrong?

I miss community.

Working remotely has so many benefits for this life stage, and I appreciate the flexibility that it affords me.  However, I miss the reciprocal benefits of “loving up” on people daily.  Working in a school affords a myriad of these experiences, and I remember well how depleted I felt (even as an extrovert) after a full school day. I miss the informal interactions, the messiness of how human beings engage with each other in a tight community. 

I must create a new community.

So I texted two friends and made a plan to walk this week, and I finally introduced myself two two of the only other women my age on the 4th floor in the CIC building where I work (I have been eyeing them for months, but not in a stalker kind-of way- promise).  I also plan to explore a new creative outlet, a way to meet people that is open-ended.

Be patient, but vigilant.

I know that building meaningful community takes time, but I will also pay attention to the somatic cues that signal sadness.  Loneliness feels physical to me, and saying it out loud feels scary, but I welcome the accountability partners.
